Au fait with the lycra way

These are exciting times in Yorkshire. Many months ago when we were told the "UCI" was coming to Ripon, my elderly mother assumed a new paint factory was opening!

Ever since the Tour de France Grand Depart shone a fortunately sunny light on Yorkshire, we're all now becoming rather au fait with the cycling world lingo. The 2019 road cycling World Championships have brought big names in the riding world, as well as public events to not only the host towns of Harrogate but also the smaller market towns and city of Ripon.

Supportive crowds in Ripon - despite the torrential rain!

Crowds have supported the riders and braved some challenging conditions. Particularly Tuesday, when the downpour was relentless and many riders succumbed to crashing in gigantic lake like puddles. In fact, as I write this post, it's not sounding much better... But what a great atmosphere there's been, even if the time trials will probably be remembered for the record breaking rain rather than race results.

If you find yourself amongst the crowds or a looking for something to do in Ripon or Harrogate, on Friday the 27th, a market place fan zone will be operational with stage and big screen, so you can watch all developments as the race approaches Ripon.

From 7pm locals and visitors alike of different generations can tap their feet, or splash them in puddles (disclaimer - weather depending, can't promise puddles) to Viva Forever courtesy of a Spice Girls tribute group, followed by the daily Hornblower ceremony, finishing up with The Cavern Nights (a Beatles tribute) playing until 11pm.

But that's not all!

All weekend there will be entertainment on the square and if that's not enough you can always seek solace in the many independent cafes or browse in some of the interesting small clothing, gift and interiors shops and contemplate the unmentionable approach of Christmas.
